Background & history

SustainGRC was founded in London in 2022 by Dr Ahmed Shawky, drawing on two decades of Big Four assurance, risk management and board-level governance — built as the platform he wished he had as a practitioner.

Its founding conviction is that non-financial data deserves the same rigour as financial data. The company — registered as SustainGRC Ltd, and previously named LevelUp ESG Ltd and LevelUp Governance Ltd — began with sustainability and ESG and expanded into a unified governance, risk and compliance platform spanning five domains and more than forty modules. What SustainGRC is

SustainGRC is an AI-native platform that unifies governance, risk, compliance and sustainability on a single governed record — the Governance Intelligence Infrastructure.

Its defining principle, enforced at the database level, is that AI proposes, a human confirms, and the system records both. Records move through a defined lifecycle — draft, review, approved, locked — and once approved are immutable: changes are made by supersession, never silent edit. A single evidence store (DocVault) and AI Data Quality with lineage and anomaly detection underpin every domain.
