Dr. Ahmed Shawky
Founder & CEO, SustainGRC
SustainGRC was founded in London in 2022 by Dr Ahmed Shawky, after two decades in Big Four assurance, internal audit and board-level governance. As an auditor and Chief Audit Executive, his job was to decide whether a number could be trusted — and to keep asking one question of everything: how do you know?
He kept finding that financial data could answer it and non-financial data could not. So he studied why. His doctorate at Durham examined why ESG assurance so often fails to prevent greenwashing, drawing on 47 in-depth interviews with board members, audit committees and assurance providers — part of a wider body of more than 250 conversations across his career. The finding was consistent: the governance beneath non-financial data is poorly defined, most boards underestimate what assurance requires, and the data was never built to be believed.
SustainGRC is the answer he built — the infrastructure he wished he had had in every audit committee he sat in, holding non-financial data to the standard the profession has always applied to money.
Our Purpose
Every organisation runs two versions of itself — the one that exists, and the one on paper. For financial data, a century of controls, lineage and evidence keeps the two aligned, and a board can trust what it is handed. For everything else — emissions, risk, the control said to be operating, the supplier said to be assured — that reconciliation never happened. The data can be asserted, but not proven. We exist to close that gap: to give non-financial data the means to be re-walked, checked and believed by someone who wasn't in the room. Assertion is priced as risk. Evidence is priced as trust.
